Materials testing training facility

The trainees in materials testing, specialising in metal, are trained at the TU Dortmund in the various laboratories of the chairs of materials testing and materials technology. The core task is to prepare, conduct and evaluate tests that characterise the mechanical, chemical and physical properties of materials. Due to the research, the training here at the TU-Dortmund is an excellent mixture of the conventional training content as well as modern procedures.

Within metallography, samples are taken and prepared for further analytical methods such as microscopy or hardness testing by means of grinding, polishing and contrasting.

Another large area is mechanical testing. Here, the mechanical characteristics of a material are determined by means of various destructive testing methods, such as the tensile test or the notched bar impact test.
